Melissa Yan

Melissa is passionate about solving legal issues in the commercial and corporate world with her creative perspective. She enjoys working on innovative projects and emerging technology that encounter interesting legal challenges in TMT, privacy and IP law. She assists with brand clearance searches, trade mark proceedings, negotiating commercial contracts, regulatory and compliance matters in TMT and privacy, consumer law advice, and corporate deals. Melissa is interested in understanding each client’s brand and developing strategies to protect their intellectual property and reputation in New Zealand and internationally.

Melissa graduated from the University of Auckland with an LLB(Hons)/BA, majoring in Media, Film, and Television. Her LLB Honours dissertation focused on trade mark parodies and the intersection of trade marks rights and freedom of expression.

Melissa is a member of Women in Film and Television NZ (WIFT), Auckland Women Lawyers’ Association (AWLA), Technology Users Association of New Zealand (TUANZ), TechWomen New Zealand and NZ Asian Lawyers. She also enjoys attending events and seminars hosted by the Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand (IPSANZ).
